Meals under $2: Easy 5 minute Tofu Burgers

This is a meal for 4-6 people under $2 depending where you get your ingredients.

Easy 5 minute Tofu Burgers

1lb extra firm tofu (I freeze it first then defrost but it’s not necessary) – I can buy this for 99cents.

Braggs Liquid Aminos (you can use light soy sauce or tamari instead)

oregano, parsley, nutritional yeast, salt & pepper

4-6 small dinner buns (the regular hamburger buns are too big for this) (I bought a bag of discounted dinner buns for $1 for 10)

Take the block of tofu and cut down the middle. Then, put each piece on its side and slice in two or three pieces (three will make thin burgers). Place tofu slices on a plate and sprinkle with Braggs (perhaps a tsp on each side) and spices.  Fry the spiced sided in a greased pan, while it is cooking, sprinkle braggs and spices on the other side. Fry till golden brown on both sides. Medium heat works best. Place each tofu slice on a bun. I find this tastes amazing with lettuce, tomato and hummus but you can use traditional hamburger toppings as well. Guacamole and salsa would be yummy as well. Be creative!

I’ve seen these made with curry powder & turmeric instead of the other spices, that’s definitely something to try out!

To keep the meal really frugal, serve with roasted potatoes and fresh beans from the farmers market or your garden. I get a big bag of potatoes for under $2 and have beans in my garden.

Enjoy!

  1. ThankYou! The tofu burger was delicious, though I could not taste the spices… The tofu was like a subsitution for cheese. Altogether it was delicious and I enjoyed it VERY MUCH!

  2. So glad you enjoyed these Jane! The key is to play around with the spices to create the flavour you want. I find adding some curry really helps with flavour. Good luck!
