Cooking with Surplus & Excess

I was reading one of my favourite zines last night. I have so many zines that I had forgotten how much I love this one and realize I should use it and read it more often. The zine is called “Cooking with Surplus & Excess”.

It  is jammed packed with information on what to do with salvaged and what he calls “government” foods (things like powdered milk, creamed corn, oatmeal…) I am assuming he means foods acquired from the food bank.

The zine contains an extensive list of fruits and veggies, recipes, spice mixes you can make, sauces and uses for all kinds of other foods. He also tells you how you can cook it using DIY solar cooking & using recycled items to make your own little stove using a tuna can, wax and some cardboard. Pretty cool.

Another great section is how he tells you how to grow things from veggies that have started sprouting like ginger, potatoes, garlic and how you can plant turnip tops to eat its greens and avocado pits for a household plant.

I purchased 10lbs of potatoes yesterday for under $3 (good price where I live) and know I will have some that could possibly start sprouting as we don’t eat a whole lot of them and even though I always plan on preparing some, I always end up with extra. I do have sprouted potatoes which I will plant like I did last year. They are the easiest veggie to grow. You can use a box, garbage pail or any container larger than 5 gallons. Just make sure the soil is loose so they have room to grow.

The zine is being sold at Microcosm Publishing: http://microcosmpublishing.com/catalog/zines/1569/ (I see that it is currently sold out but perhaps if you email them you can ask when they will stock more)

I was unable to find an email in the zine, or even a website so Microcosm might be your only source of acquiring this zine.

Since zines are usually anti-copyright I’d be happy to get my copy photocopied for anyone who needs one.

  1. Hi, I am trying to obtain a copy of this zine but Microcosm doesn’t know when they’ll have any more copies. Is there anyway I can have a xeroxed copy of yours? I will gladly pay for materials and your trouble.

    • Hey Greg!

Email me your postal address (info@thefrugalvegan.tk) and I will xerox a copy over to you :) No need to pay for it, just do something nice for someone else in return instead :)
