Minimalism & Home Ownership

I might as well let the cat out of the bag: My partner and I are moving!! Now, although there is one city we are supposed to move to, that is not set in stone and we won’t know for a few weeks. When this opportunity came up, we concluded that no matter what, we had to move away from the city we currently live in. We no longer feel like we want to be here. I’ve been wanting to leave for about 5 years & my partner is also finally ready. I’ve spent 10 years in a place which never felt right to me, and that is a tough thing to do for one’s sanity. Sadly, I’ve been feeling increasingly more depressed this past year & loved ones around concluded that this is the best decision for us too. So regardless of what happens with this possible job opportunity, we have decided to clear out of here within the year! I am through the roof with joy, no one can describe this elation I am feeling.
After the decision was made, my whole attitude about life changed all of a sudden. I started detaching from things and people around here and I am comfortable just cruising along quietly and under the radar until it is time to go. After all, I still have Airbnb guests to host!
We have made a few decisions regarding the move.

*Not selling our house
We decided to keep the house and rent it out through a national property management company. The housing market here never really collapsed as the city is growing and there is construction everywhere so the value keeps climbing. We will keep it for a minimum of a year. If there are no issues or glitches with renting it, we’ll just keep doing that. Let someone else pay our mortgage! And perhaps in 5 years we’ll sell, bank the money and invest it. House living? Not for me, too much hassle.
*Selling all our stuff
We are selling the ENTIRE contents of our house aside from a handful of things like our bed and Saeco coffee machine. Seriously, you think I was going to get rid of that Saeco? HA! No way. Though I am getting rid of my other coffee contraptions! There is nothing worse than a house full of stuff. I hate stuff!! We realized quickly that we don’t need most of it. That we don’t really enjoy house living and that we prefer just having the basics and spending money on things like travel and other experiences. I prefer spending money on experiences over things, hands down. I tend to buy things when I am unhappy, and judging how much stuff is in this house, I am thinking these years were not easy! LOL
*Purging Process
Boy do I LOVE purging. I really do. I am the opposite of a pack rat. I love throwing stuff out and giving it away. I made a list of everything I had to do. Every day, I have a small chore to do for the move. One day I might be listing things on Kijiji to sell, another day I clear out my closet for donations. I started separating the things I want to sell versus the things I want to give away. This week, I’m off the the record store with some vintage vinyl! Next week is the antique shop with some other items. We have hired a junk removal service (a local one, student guy!) to throw out things we can’t throw out ourselves with our car. The list is endless, but I am having fun with it. The nice thing, is that I am getting extra income by selling my things! Once most of the nick-nacks are gone, we will have a house sale, which means that people can come in and buy whatever they see. I can’t wait for that. Might be a couple of months before this happens though but I am excited!
I can’t go completely ballistic until everything is all said and done. But once we get 100% confirmation, I’ll be moving fast around here.
I will definitely try to post daily, but I might miss some posts here and there due to things being rather busy right now. On a good day I can get 3-4 posts done but lately I haven’t had the time to write as much. So bare with me. Thank you.
PS: If you are missing my vegan recipe posts, stay tuned, I am working on a few!

I’m moving, too. Will be glad to be rid of my house. It served its purpose. Looks like you are going to be nomads as you said you don’t like house living? I’m taking some furniture with me, but not much. Have been purging, too.In my case I’m waiting for seller to sell his house and to actually sign the papers on mine; then I’ll really be able to purge.Out with the old!
I totally agree with you on the junk that people eat. I didn’t grow up with fast food. It’s a whole different lifestyle. People eat out and then sit and watch tv for hours, saying there’s no time to cook. I watched a Jamie Oliver program where he showed how they make chicken mcnuggets. They weren’t food anymore by the time they got through, and I couldn’t believe the animosity of the School Dept. towards him. Well, that’s my rant. I’ve been eating mostly out of my freezer and cupboards. Good luck with your move.
Maggie, that’s great that you are moving! Purging is great and moving is a good excuse to do it. We did love the house and living it it while here but realized that the time has come to leave all that behind. I suppose we are more nomadic than some. I think I prefer being able to move on the fly without too many hassles and I do like to move around. Not one to stay put for 10 years in one place which is what happened here and which is the reason we became unhappy with it. Change is growth! Thanks for the good luck wishes, looks like I’ll be here a few months getting rid of things
